The Mindfulness Workbook for Teen Self-Harm

Welcome back to Bibliotherapy Thursday! This week, we’ve picked a workbook geared toward teens who are struggling with self-harming behaviors: The Mindfulness Workbook for Teen Self-Harm by Gina M. Biegel and Stacie Cooper. Though we often equate self-harm with cutting, there are many unhealthy behaviors that we may find ourselves engaging in as we try to cope with the darkest parts of life, and this book covers them all.

The workbook is divided into four sections: “Self-Harming Behaviors,” in which the reader learns about the nature of self-harm and has a space to reflect on its effect on their life; “Be Mindful, Not Harmful” which introduces the concept of mindfulness and shares helpful exercises; “Self-Harming Thoughts and Feelings” which explores the cognitive aspect of preventing self-harm; and “Take Control of Your Life” which helps the reader build a strengths-based plan for overcoming self-harm.

We’ve found that this book is particularly helpful for teens and young adults who are introspective and analytical. If you or someone you know enjoys journaling and reflection but struggle opening up to others about a vulnerable topic, this may be a wonderful first step.

You can find The Mindfulness Workbook in print and e-book at these retailers:
