Bedtime Bonnet

Welcome back to Bibliotherapy Thursday! On this first week of February, we’re honoring Black History Month with a brilliant children’s book that both celebrates Black culture and offers a helpful tool for parents struggling to introduce a bonnet to their preschoolers’ nighttime routine: Bedtime Bonnet by Nancy Redd.

Bedtime Bonnet follows a little girl who knows that “When the sun goes down, our hair goes up!” She watches her brother, sister, parents, and grandparents care for their hair before bed, but when she goes to get her bonnet to protect her own curls, she can’t find it!

Within a single picture book, author Nancy Redd offers representation of a loving multigenerational Black family, introduces children of every background to a significant part of Black culture, and provides an effective resource to help parents and caregivers incorporate wearing a bonnet into a child’s bedtime routine. Pair the wonderful story with the gorgeous, animation-like illustrations by Nneka Meyers, and this book is sure to be a hit for both kids and grown-ups alike!

You can find Bedtime Bonnet in print, e-book, and audiobook at these retailers:
