Yoga for Little Kids

Welcome back to Bibliotherapy Thursday! This week’s pick is a sweet, thoughtful guide to gentle movement that helps toddlers become more comfortable in their bodies. Yoga for Little Kids by Nicole Koleshis provides 20 simple and engaging poses to help children practice mindfulness, emotion regulation, flexibility, and other important aspects of mental and physical health.

What makes this book especially wonderful is the fact that the poses are named alongside an intention, such as “Lion Pose for Big Feelings,” “Turtle Pose for Sound Sleep,” and “Tree Post for Balance.” In doing this, Koleshis offers both kids and their grown-ups a reliable tool to address common toddler struggles.

While you can’t go wrong starting from the beginning, you may consider allowing your toddler to flip through the book and pick a pose that looks interesting to them. As they learn them and grow more comfortable, you can either try the sequences in the book or create a sequence of their favorites. Moving forward, you can remind them of effective poses in challenging moments or incorporate yoga into their morning and/or evening routines. And, as always, the techniques in this children’s book are just as applicable to adults, so try a few yourself!
