Breathe Like a Bear
Welcome back to Bibliotherapy Thursday! Last week we featured a workbook that can help adults adopt mindfulness practices to improve their mental and physical health. This week’s pick, Breathe Like a Bear by Kira Willey, teaches similar strategies to children in a brilliantly approachable way.
This cheerfully illustrated book is divided into five sections: “Be Calm”, “Focus”, “Imagine”, “Make Some Energy”, and “Relax”. Each section has six activities that use strategies like breathing exercises, grounding techniques, and visualization to build emotion regulation skills and practice empathy.
This is a wonderful book to read through one or two activities at a time. As you go through it together, your child may be drawn to a few in particular that you can use throughout the day if you see them struggling. And as always, these techniques are equally beneficial for adults, so practice them together and you may discover a few new favorites too!
