Mindfulness Workbook for Stress Relief
Welcome back to Bibliotherapy Thursday and Happy 2022!
The new year can be an exciting time: It’s a fresh start, a new beginning. Many of us enjoy making new year’s resolutions or taking the opportunity to crystallize goals or aspirations. However, it can also be a bit daunting — especially if you’re feeling exhausted or raw after a difficult holiday season. Not only that, but being inundated with commercials, posts, and conversations about significant and even radical changes you should be making to your life in the new year can intensify struggles with things like disordered eating and self harm. It can pile on stress and self-judgement at the worst possible time. If you’re energized by the prospect of refocusing on your mental and physical well-being but want to do so in a gentle and compassionate way, the Mindfulness Workbook for Stress Relief by April Snow, LMFT is a wonderful start.
Mindfulness, the practice of observing thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgement, is one of the best tools in promoting good mental health. As we navigate our multifaceted lives, it’s not uncommon for us to push down worry and discomfort so we can focus on what we need to do. Unfortunately, that can lead to a host of both physical and mental repercussions as these stressors become too overwhelming to keep pushed down. Mindfulness offers a means to recognize our needs and address them in a healthy and effective way.
The book itself is divided into sections exploring the role of mindfulness in aspects of your life such as work, relationships, grief, sleep, and chronic pain. Each chapter offers mindfulness activities you can engage in throughout your day, as well as exercises through which you can practice skills and deepen self-understanding. As we gain skills to manage life stressors, we find ourselves better able to improve our lives in ways that are personal and meaningful to us.
