Comfort Reads

“So Matilda’s strong young mind continued to grow, nurtured by the voices of all those authors who had sent their books out into the world like ships on the sea. These books gave Matilda a hopeful and comforting message: You are not alone.” - Roald Dahl, Matilda

Welcome back to Bibliotherapy Thursday! So far this year, we’ve recommended books that run the gamut from clinically informative texts to approachable children’s books. Though the genres may vary, they were all written specifically to help readers cope with or manage a challenging aspect of their lives. But here’s the thing: Books don’t have to be new or solution-focused to be helpful. How many of us over the years have found solace in returning to a favorite book? Characters feel like old friends. Cozily described settings feel like home. Dialogue feels like finding your childhood diary. Familiar plots with the assurance of a known ending feel safe and secure. A memoir feels like seeing your reflection in a mirror.

When the future or even the present feels shaky and unknown, give yourself the kindness of turning to a comfort read. And don’t forget about those middle grade and children’s books! You never know what parts might resonate with you today that you never even thought about before.

We’ll be taking a break for the new year, but we’ll be back the week after for our first pick of 2022!

Morning Light doesn’t receive compensation for sharing book recommendations, nor do we receive a commission if you choose to buy the book. We just love them and think some of our clients may find them useful!
