Daily Wisdom for Why Does He Do That?

Welcome back to Bibliotherapy Thursday! Our most frequently recommended book is the domestic violence-focused Why Does He Do That? by Lundy Bancroft, and it has been a game changer for women healing from or contemplating getting out of an abusive relationship. That book is a favorite for a reason, packed full of information about both the nature of abuse and the process of leaving an abusive situation. But that’s just it — it’s a process. Abuse is insidious, and it impacts every aspect of your life. It only makes sense, then, that it takes time and effort to leave an abusive relationship, especially as the exhaustion and pain of living with it every day makes it harder to climb out. Knowing this, Bancroft published Daily Wisdom for Why Does He Do That?: Encouragement for Women Involved with Angry and Controlling Men.

The short readings in the book offer seven themes, one for each day of the week: Clarity, Surviving to Thrive, Healing, Your Own Best Friend, Staying Connected, Guiding Children, and Each New Day. Each section ends with an affirmation that you can take with you even after you put the book down. A common part of abuse is isolation, and this book is like having a trusted, nonjudgmental friend by your side as you navigate the “long series of little changes that will ultimately add up to a big one.”
