Boys Will Be Human

The holidays are right around the corner, and if you’re anything like me, you love giving and receiving books as gifts. I have fond memories of a few iconic books I was gifted as a young girl entering “womanhood” (The Care and Keeping of You, anyone?), but for a long time I didn’t have any recommendation-worthy books of that sort that were geared toward adolescent boys — until an exceptional book was released last month.

Written by actor and activist Justin Baldoni, Boys Will Be Human: A Get-Real Gut-Check Guide to Becoming the Strongest, Kindest, Bravest Person You Can Be is the book I wish every man had when they were kids. Baldoni uses his own warm, honest voice and real-life experiences as a young man to explore themes such as masculinity, body image, friendships, consent, and other topics that deeply affect boys’ senses of identity and how they move through the world. While this is a perfectly developmentally-appropriate book for most adolescents 11 and up, men of any age may find this quite a healing book to read themselves if they missed out on these types of open and honest conversations in their own childhoods.
