Thriving with ADHD
Happy Bibliotherapy Thursday! It’s November, which means we’re a few months in to what for many kids was the first semester back doing in-person learning. For many parents, this shift, as well as the months of virtual learning prior to it, have brought to light struggles their children may be experiencing in school. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a fairly significant one of those concerns, affecting about 11% of school-age children. If your child has been diagnosed with ADHD, or if you are seeing the signs of it, the workbook Thriving with ADHD by Kelli Miller is a fantastic resource for your child as they navigate the process of managing ADHD symptoms.
This expertly laid out workbook features 60 bite-sized activities that children can use to learn more about their ADHD and discover strategies to succeed at home and at school. The activities are broken up into different chapters: (1) Understanding and Getting to Know my ADHD; (2) My Strengths and Weaknesses; (3) Managing Emotions: Skills for Anger, Frustration, and Outbursts; (4) Skills for Focus, Attention, and Listening (Even When I’m Really Bored); (5) Self-Control, Managing Impulses, and Making Good Decisions; (6) Making Habits and Routines Simple AND Fun; (7) Friends, Communication, and Speaking Up; (8) A Plan for Making Plans: Homework, Projects, and Long-Term Plans; and (9) I Am Prepared!
What makes this an especially great book is the fact that it’s written by someone who truly understands the reality of ADHD. Miller has two children with ADHD and she is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who has dedicated her career to helping kids with ADHD succeed. So not only does she offer tried-and-true strategies, she shares them in a way that is compassionate and empowering. For kids who struggle with understanding what is happening in their bodies and may feel different from their classmates, this approach reassures them that with a few tools and strategies in their pockets, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.
